Sirens for Solidarity

Release Date: April 11, 2020
A note from Mayor Sarah Neibart

As we continue to celebrate the holiday weekend, I wanted to take a moment to thank our community for adapting their religious celebrations to accommodate social distancing.  This physical distancing is an act of charity and a duty of love - so that we do not expose a neighbor or family member who cannot fight this illness.

This Spring’s holiday observances do not quite resemble years past; however the empathy and generosity that our community has demonstrated are extraordinary. Many of you have offered to assist our elderly residents, cook meals for our first responders, organize online fundraisers, and donate personal protective equipment to our healthcare workers. These incredible acts of kindness have given me so much hope in the face of this pandemic.

While the virus may seem like the strongest influence on our lives right now, COVID-19 does not have the power to diminish the hope we have for our community. To support our neighbors who have been directly impacted by this illness and to honor our frontline workers and first responders, until further notice, we will be sounding the emergency siren throughout Mendham Township each Monday at 6:00pm.

Starting this Monday, April 13th at 6:00pm, I encourage residents, when you hear the siren, to step outside for a few minutes (on your front steps or in your yard), wave, clap your hands, and make some noise in solidarity. While we are physically distanced, we can share in this moment together.

I look forward to hearing you Monday evening. Until then, Happy Holidays and please remember to stay home and practice social distancing and good hygiene. The more aggressive we are in our efforts, the sooner we can begin to get back to some semblance of normalcy.
