Safely Honoring Memorial Day and Celebrating the Unofficial Start of Summer

Release Date: May 22, 2020
A Message from Mayor Sarah Neibart

Memorial Day weekend typically marks the kick-off of summer, with many New Jerseyans heading down the shore and others taking part in outdoor celebrations and large group activities (which unfortunately are not possible this time around). Although many of our get-togethers will look different from years past, like every year, the long weekend culminates with Memorial Day, our country’s federal holiday to commemorate and honor those who have died in service to our country.

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended life as we know it, forcing us to alter our behavior for the sake of public health and Memorial Day is no exception. Though many of our state’s parades and public events have been cancelled, we should do our best to observe this holiday with the same warmth and respect that we always have.

During these uncertain times, it is more important than ever to honor those who died fighting in wars during other difficult times in our Nation’s history. Their service and sacrifice helped shape the future for the better. Today, the future may also seem uncertain but our community will get through this and emerge stronger than before.

Have a good weekend, and be safe.

Sarah Neibart
