Mendham Township Official News & Announcements.

Remember to Recreate Responsibly

Release Date: July 17, 2020
A Message from Mayor Sarah Neibart

Since the start of the Pandemic, we have seen increased usage of our parks. As an avid user of our open spaces, I have always viewed our hiking trails as some of Mendham Township’s best kept secrets. Though, over the last few months, it is clear that our local secret is out!

If you go online you can see Buttermilk Falls listed as a prime hiking destination in the Northeast.  This is a testament to its beauty and the good conservation work that has been done over the years to maintain the park. Unfortunately over the last few weekends, there have been reports of overcrowding, littering, and the consumption of alcohol on park grounds.

Our Mendham Township Police Department has been proactive in addressing these issues by interfacing with both residents and park-goers, posting signage, and ensuring that traffic and parking guidelines are being followed.

If you choose to visit Buttermilk Falls this weekend, please carry in and carry out all of your trash and garbage.  Also, be aware that grilling, fires, and alcohol are not permitted in any of the Township’s parks.

Starting this weekend, the Police Department will be restricting parking and closing lots once they are at capacity to ensure there is no overcrowding of the Falls area.  Additionally, they will be patrolling the area regularly.

Most of the time, hiking can be a wonderful activity for social distancing, so I encourage you to participate. In addition to Buttermilk Falls, the Township has several other trails that are waiting to be discovered.  When I hike at Meadowood, Tempe Wick Preserve, Mosle (just to name a few!),  I rarely encounter other people. If you are thinking of going hiking with your family this weekend, I encourage you to check out these beautiful areas.  For more information visit: https://www.hikemendham.org

Spending time outdoors can help you stay healthy, but please recreate responsibly.

Happy Trails and have a great weekend!

Sarah Neibart

Mayor, Mendham Township
